Getting more into the sport of cycling as well as biking. What recommendations would you suggest when choosing a mid entry level mtb. I have a cyclocross with a carbon frame, currently riding on 700x23's and use it as a commuter about 4/5 that I work. I love it but I would like to have a better ride for hitting those deep slopes at the mountain bike park.

Thanks

You're probably gonna want a full suspension if you're hitting the parks. Swing by a local bike shop and talk to some people. They will be able to put you on a few different models and let you test them out. Be prepared to spend upwards of 2 grand on an entry level full suspension rig.

I'll probably go for a mtb that only has front suspension since all I will be doing with it will be free riding and light to medium trails. I'll shop around and let you know what options I find.

For a hardtail, look to spend like $600-$1000 for a well equipped bike that will last a long time. Stay away from the entry level steel stuff.

Thanks for the input hiddeng. That's exactly the price range I was thinking about for my first real mtb. As you may known I was aiming at around 1200 tops for a cross bike and ended up finding an expert carbon crux on sale for 1800. Slapped some road tires on that puppy and commute four days a week. It rides very smoothly. Not looking to spend as much on the mtb since It won't be ridden as much.

I'll look around this summer for a suspension bike, not high on my list of priorities but I'll post up when I find something I like. :p

Yea, in that range the things you want to look for are good brakes (stay away from cheap mechanical disc brakes, they suck) and a decent fork, Rockshox or Fox make good suspension, Suntour makes a lot of cheap forks but they dont last as long.

I picked my bike up on sale for around $450-500 (can't remember exactly) and it's served me well so far. Raleigh Mojave 4.0.
^This guy knows a lot more about the things than I do though, so I'd listen to him
