I have the opportunity to buy a well kept, but high mileage 6th gen accord. Its a 4cyl ex. 2dr. However its automatic and i really dont know how good that transmission is.

Is a manual swap out of the question? If not, is it horrible expensive to have a shop do the swap for me??

I know that in the civics and auto is terrible for performance as it doesnt handle power very well.

The 4cyl transmissions are much more reliable than the v6's. That said, a few people with 4 cyl autos have still had problems with the transmissions going out early (myself included).

How high mileage? You can always either buy a used transmission from a junkyard with low miles and swap that in (cheapest), rebuild the current transmission, or swap to a manual transmission if the transmission ever does go out

Its probably in the range of 100k or more. Probably more as it was used as work vehicle for a few years.

I know that the current owner did do a little racing on it. However im not sure how much.

Is swapping the manual transmission expensive?

I know that you must use Honda ATF or else you'll develope problems. I figure people who have problems either don't change the ATF often or they use the wrong fluid.

Can be, and honestly if you think you'd want a manual transmission then you'd be better off just buying a car that way.

sounds like you should research the 5spd swap, ask tranny shops in your area how much they would want for labor and then look for the tranny it self, then add on about 400$ for all the other bits and thats your price.

yea, just buy a 5 speed, youd be better off buying one the way you want it. and just cuz it was a work vehicle doesnt mean it was exactly treated well either. our work vehicle at work just got a new tranny.....01 civic with 66k ;)
