I would try rewiring the extensions first.
Grab a roll of 18ga wire from the auto store (I like Napa's wire) and some 18-22ga "crimp n seal" butt connectors. Or "solder n seal". The connectors are NOT cheap, but well worth it. Use a good crimper too, that won't cut the insulation. Crimp, then heat the ends of the butt connector to shrink it, stop heating when the gooey sealant comes out
