My 2001 Accord VP (F23A5 non-VTEC motor) threw a CEL about 6 weeks ago. I had it read and it showed 2 codes...one was P1739 and the other I don't remember but it was a "random misfire" code. The mechanic changed the 3rd gear pressure switch (as per the P1739 code) and suggested a tune-up since I had 107K on my original cap, rotor and wires (I had changed the plugs at 80K).
I picked up the parts and did the tune-up and all was well until I felt a miss (at approx. 3000 rpm) and it threw another CEL. I replaced the coil (with an aftermarket TEC) and again all seemed well. This weekend it threw the code again. The code is intermittent (comes and goes) and when I had it read it says P1382. I realize that this is a CYP code (cylinder position sensor-no reading). I checked the connections and found none lose. I have done some investigating (online) and it seems that this can mean one of at least three things:
1) a bad distributor, 2) an open (short) in the CYP wire running to the distributor connector, 3) a faulty ECM.
Obviously #2 would be most desireable for cost reasons. (I have read of guys changing their distributors only to still have the code). I am in the process of trying to find somebody to test the resistance of my CYP. I don't want to randomly change any more parts.
A knowledgeable Honda guy has suggested that my use of aftermarket (name brand) cap, rotor, and wires can cause problems in Hondas. He says OEM parts only or you will have problems.
Could the use of name brand aftermarket parts be causing this intermittent CEL code P1382?
PS: The cap is SMP premium 'Bluestreak' which is made in Japan and looks to have beefier brass contacts than the OE. The rotor is AC and made in Mexico and the contacts appear slightly thinner than the OE. The wires are Carquest brand made by Prestolite who also makes the OE.
Are Honda's really so sensitive to non OE parts? What do you think?
