Hey peeps,

So I wanna upgrade my speakers and I'm thinking of going with the Alpine sps-610 or polk db651. I'm thinking coaxial cos it's cheap, I can install them myself and I won't need an amp (yet). The only think is I don't know if I will have the upgrade bug. I'm currently on stock speakers. So I hope this will be an upgrade. I have a pioneer 33hd headunit.

I'm thinking of adding a powered sub. The reasons are that, I want bass (duh), but I don't want overwhelming-annoy-your-neighbors kind. I want it complimentary and tight. I also want something that can slide under my driver's or passenger's seat (hopefully). I will probably need the trunk space since i'm expecting a kid.

What do you think about these powered subs? I have read mostly good reviews but occasionally some that says it fails after a while.

Here's a pyle
http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PLBASS8-8-Inch-Active-Subwoofer/dp/B001RJMZRE/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

Here's a kenwood

Any other suggestions is appreciated. Thanks.

Not a big fan of those powered subs, if you want, just get some good 6.5" and 6x9. Power them with a 2-4 channel amp and you should be good to go. If you don't want to use your trunk space, i'm sure one 10" sub wont take too much room if you get a decent size box and a 300 watt RMS to power the sub.

Here is what I would do.

Delete your 6x9 in the rears if you plan on getting a sub.

Get a 1st gen or 2ed gen 10" alpine type R or a Kicker Comp, both relatively cheap and is good speakers to use. Power those with any amp that can constantly put out 300-500 watts RMS.

Get some Infinity 6.5" kappa series, power them with a 2ch amp that's about 300 watts RMS.

Should be enough for a BANG and quiet enough when you turn it down for your kid.

About $500-$600 should get you...

A ported/sealed 10" Type R = $100-150 on craigslist
I would get an Alpine PDX 1.600 = $200-$250 eBay or craigslist
6.5" infinity kappa series = $100-120 eBay
Alpine pdx 2.150 = $200 eBay or craigslist

Trust me, once you get some subs, you'll always want to upgrade until you're fully satisfied with it.

If you don't want Subs get...

Alpine type R 6.5" speakers
Alpine type R 6x9 speakers
and power them with a Alpine PDX 4.150

Should be loud enough if you don't like subs.

Hey man,

Thanks for your tip. My budget for the sub is probably less than $200 including amp (for now). Maybe I'll hold off the sub. I went to bestbuy today to listen to some subs. I guess they have the kickers, polks, and stuff. I think I saw an alpine. I didn't quite enjoy them actually. It was too boomy but maybe it'll be different with being in the trunk and the road noise. Maybe I have to go to a real stereo shop.

not there
definetly keep an eye on craigslist for subs ive gotten some really good deals before and for speakers you want components for sure if you dont want to spend $130 on infinity kappa @ amazon then get the pioneer components that go for $70 at the very least believe me there is a huge different from coaxials and even if you just drop the tweeter in the factory dash location you WILL hear the difference.

If you want a little kick in bass, but nothing boomy, or that will rattle your car to death. Then I would recommend and Infiniti Basslink.

I bought one when my mom was still the owner of the Accord and it was perfect. And it took up close to no space in the trunk. I loved it.

They have a newer model, Infiniti Basslink II, which is the same but the speaker is square in shape.

+1 on that, I had Infinity Basslink version one which is better IMO than second version. It produced enough bass for my car and I liked it.

I just got my polk db651 today and it sounds amazing compared to the stock speakers. The only issue is the tweeter is pushing against the stock speaker grill because I used the spacer provided. Maybe should have gone with the db651s but I heard the bass response is not as good. I think it'll be ok. I don't think the tweeter will break. If it does, i'll upgrade to components. :p

Even these coaxials feels like it's hungry for more power. I think the next step for me will be to get an amp. Little steps.

I will check out the infinity sub. I see some people selling them on craigslist. Not sure if it's safe as I won't have any warranty.

Good choice on the polks.. i have them all around in my car and love them. I did my sub set up with a 12 Pioneer Champion series, and Sony 1200... it was only about 300 for my set up and sounds great in my car...

I got this in my car and LOVE it.... hard hitting, clean, but not a neighbor disturbing sound.

I have it mounted under the drivers seat. You can tune it to be boomy if you want too, it can handle it. I have mine set for more of a tight bass.

It includes the full wiring kit with it as well. I actually got mine on sale for 129. but I would def pay 160 for it without flinching.
