It looks great for a rattle can job, but dont u think with all the time money and effort that its better to rent or borrow a compressor and paint gun?

I just dont see paint out of a can lasting for more than 1 year before it starts chipping off. Thats just my skepticism.

Its really not that much compared to the rental price at the rate im doing this. I dont want to pay to rent the equip every week. That doesnt make sense to do at this time. And no, the paint wont chip, as long as it was properly surface prepped.

If you would have rented a compressor and a gun it would have been done in a weekend if you prepped everything before hand.

I can't tell you how many times I have painted various car parts with a rattle can. I always prep everything properly just as if I was going to spray it with a gun and it never lasts more than a year before it starts chipping.

I agree that what you have done looks good now, but a year down the road it WILL start chipping like crazy.

So are you advocating this to be a replacement for the gun and compressor?

To do things right there is no replacement for an air powered paint gun.

if you are spraying automotive paint, or rolling it, or using an hvlp gun, it doesnt matter as long as the chemical balance, prep, and application are done properly. Whether its in a rattle can, or quart for a hvlp gun, its the same paint. At that point, its all about the chemical balance. The only downside to a rattle can is spotting. And it doesnt come out with the same consistency.

It costs about $20/day to rent a compressor from Taylor Rental.

if you are spreading the project over 2 weeks or so, then its not that cost efficient than

Like I said previously, If he preps everything FIRST, then spraying it shouldn't take more than a weekend.

Its a moot point to argue about using a compressor and what not. This thread is not about a pro paint job. Its about another alternative, that doesnt cost much. You dont have to like it, or do it. No one is forcing this method upon any one. But if you are interested, the information on how its done differently, is available. Its about exploring options, and making them work.

i also sanded it down to bare metal
i used high temp primer
the primer is still intact no bare metal showing just the color and the clear have chipped away, so now you can see the primer
and i used high temp color and high temp clear, i made sure that it could be used on valve covers

Silly question, but you did sand and clean the primer before your paint right?

not a silly question because i didnt do that
am i supposed to sand down primer after its laid. if i did sand it would it leave scuff marks on the base?

Bingo! That is the problem...Yes you have to rough up the primer so that the paint will stick. I like using anywhere from 400-800 grit sandpaper, and no there will be no scuffs. Sorry to get off topic here OP. Hope this helps.
