Okay, after i bought my 1998 accord lx from the owner. On the way that I drove it back home the engine light suddenly on, and i brought the car to honda dealer for oil change n check. They said my car has a P0420 code n bad catalytic converter, pipe B, which cost 1200 to repair. I am wondering if i go the after market exhuast, and unplug the battery, will the engine light go off?

Do you guys also have any suggestion for the exhuast brand? i dont want too loud, and costing a lot.

Thanks!!!

Stealership sounds thirsty, to swap out the cat is no $1200 job. It would be best for you to buy the cat from tasauto and go to your personal mechanic, who'll do it much cheaper.

That code could also be only an o2 sensor. But if it is the catalytic converter, buy one and do it yourself to save tons of bucks. It's only six bolts and an o2 sensor holding it all together.

That's unfortunate, but whether it is the catalytic converter or the O2 sensor, NO WAY it is $1200 bucks.

Go to an independant mechanic, have them check it out and tell you the REAL cost of repair.

If I was dealership rep and said those words, I would be ashamed. And then tell you to buy one elsewhere for $150-$300 and install it yourself.

You'll need a whiz wheel at the least or a torch to change the cat. Also, good luck getting an old O2 sensor out, I had to use a pipe wrench, you know the big ones with the teeth, to get mine out. Luckily the harness is reachable so you can take out the cat with the oxygen sensor still in. Then use penetrating fluid and a big *** wrench. Just don't strip it. A new one is like $100

$1,200? Holy crap...........

You could get a full ct set up for less than that and bolt it up yourself... or take it to an exhaust shop and it'd still be cheaper.

yes unplugging the battery will turn off the check engine light.

and for about $300 you can get a entire exhaust, header to tailpipe, and put that in... sure it'll sound a little ricey, but still...
