Hey guys,
I own a 1998 Accord Sedan, AT with ~160000 miles on it. For the last 8 months or so, I've been having an issue with my car. While driving, sometimes my engine dies out. I usually have to wait for 10-15 minutes before I am able to fire it up again.
It doesn't happen that frequently but it is so unpredictable that its always bearing on my mind, whether I am driving on a highway, a one-way street or at a traffic light.
Here are a few things that I have noticed that happen when the engine stalls:
1. The speedometer and tachomteter indicator needles drop dead immediately after the engine stalls.
2. The dashboard lights, the fuel and temperature gauge still continue to function at this point.
3. When I pull over, I am able to move the transmission lever to Neutral, Reverse, 3, 2, 1 but once I move the transmission to Park, I cannot move it at all after that. Its stuck.
Under normal circumstances, I am able to move the transmission lever from Park by pressing on the brake pedal with the ignition key set to on.
I have also observed that it has happened more frequently when I am driving in rain.
I had a similar problem about a year ago as well when my engine wouldn't start for days and one day it would and then it wouldn't start again for days.
I noticed that the distributor was damaged from inside, as I could see sparks in it when the engine was cranked but it wouldn't start.
I replaced the distributor and the four cables that connect to spark plugs. The problem went away immediately and I had no issues for at least another 6 months.
A few other annoying issues that I have with my car (may or may not be be related to the issue described above):
1. When it rains, the driver side floor starts to get wet immediately. I've found the source of the leak.
Its right above the hood release latch where the electrical cables run. The cables are bunched together with a plastic tie that is clamped on to a metallic body through a hole.
I ran water from the sun-roof and noticed it come out of that hole. I got a silicone sealant to block it off but haven't done it yet.
2. I also have a CEL. I bought an OBD code scanner. I am getting a P0740. I don't feel there are any problems shifting until the 4th gear. But it doesn't shift into 5th at all. I have also observed that the engine is revving higher than normal when I try to accelerate but doesn't gather much speed like it used to before (about 8 months ago). So I don't do above 60mph any more to get a decent gas mileage.
I am not sure if the CEL has got something to do with the stuck transmission lever or could it be something less serious like a faulty brake switch.
But its weird that it gets stuck only when the engine stalls.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
