So I have tried to do my best looking around and reading but I am still kind of in the dark about how to know whats compatible with what when building your own kit. I see that there are different size turbos but can I just use any size turbo on my car as long as I can fit it in the engine bay? My goals would be to properly build a kit that would would see 220-240 hp so I think I'm suppose to use a smaller turbo from what I've read but in general how do u determine what the ideal turbo size would be for any given desired hp goal? Also do I need a certain type/size intercooler based on the turbo I decide to use? I'm sure somewhere these questions have been addressed but I've looked and failed while obtaining a headache in the process. Not trying to be a nuisance just trying to speed up my learning curve. If I can fully understand how to do this right I will proceed with slowly purchasing parts and using this as an autox/daily driver

You need to spend A LOT more time reading up on this subject. Not just on this site, but everywhere on the Internet. Maybe even some books.

Start by reading this. After you read that, read it again.

I know you think this whole subject is confusing and takes a lot of time and effort yada yada yada, but the truth is, it takes even more than you're thinking.

Spend the time researching before diving straight in. Luckily your goals are not outrageous and can be done with relative ease and simplicity.

There's quite a number of turboed F23's on this site alone that match that criteria. Look them up and study their build. They should have a build thread to go with their MR thread.

Good luck!

Well thanks for the responds. I read your link and it has a lot of info but its hard to take in so much info so fast. Would it be a bad idea to use a sidemount intercooler if I'm using low boost?

You can miz and match any parts. Go take a looks at the turbo kits they sell on ebay or hell anywhere. Once you understand what they are and what they do you can get any brand known to man and they will all play together. Take your time and read. If you are serious about this a "headache" wouldn't occur. We who take the time to search have a little umph to know about more so we just search.

^ Pretty much what those guys said. I was going to refer you to the same site Cleansleeper did. Read that one well. Once you decide on going turbo, I have a nice clean intercooler for sale that I used for my build, it will be a great looker and starting point for you. I also have a wastegate. Please see here:

PM me if interested, we can work something out.

Thanks for all the replies. I came up on a turbo for free but it needs to be rebuilt because it has in/out shaft play. Has anybody here rebuilt one before? I hear its expensive to get them rebuilt but buying the rebuild kits isn't bad. Not quite sure what trim turbo it is but its a garrett a/r .48. There's no scratches inside to indicate that the fan was touching nor r any of the fan blades damaged so I think its fine to rebuild correct? Btw I like your car russianred and if I can figure this out I would be interested in buying your intercooler soon.

if they told you it needs a rebuild then get a kit and have at it. Aso for in and out play turbos should have a bit in and out up and down etc is a no,no. But then and again if the turbo has no oil in it it will have play regardless. My turbonetics sure had play...once it was on the car and oil filled it thing got rock hard(as in no moving)

.48 ar is on the smaller side, but will spool quick and probably work for your goals. Post a pic of it?

Like Michael said - it's different when it's full of oil and fired up. As long as no up and down shaft play (axis movement) then it should be ok, especially if there is no oil seen leaking from inside.

Thanks a lot about the kinds words, let me know when you want the intercooler!
