Wondering if you've switched to premium gasoline or still running regular and why? Mechanic told me to use premium, wanted to see what others are thinking.

Happy Easter Weekend BTW ...

The major difference between normal gasoline and premium is the octane level, which dictates the flash point of the fuel. High octane in gasoline will result in a harder to attain flash point. The A/F mixture will not ignite as easily under pressure and temperature. You'll need higher octane fuel for engines with either high compression or forced induction.

Using high octane fuel in an engine that doesn't need it won't do much more than burn your money away. Using normal fuel in an engine that needs premium may cause damage in the long run because the A/F mixture ignites too early/easily and the computer has to constantly fix it.

I would only use premium gasoline if the engine requires it. Otherwise you're burning expensive gasoline your engine doesn't need.

Edit : I searched a bit on other forums. Most of them seem to use 91+ octane fuel for their 3.2l, especially the type s.
Edit 2 : You CL-S engine (10.5:1) has higher compression than the Prelude engine (10.1:1), which uses premium fuel. Your mechanic is right.

The 3.2L is engineered to use premium with its higher compression, no one running this motor should be using regular. If you have any regular left in the tank from before the swap, you can drive the car but keep adding premium as often as you can. Unless you have nearly a full tank, in which case I'd siphon some out.

Where I live 93 is never more than 20-25 cents more than reg, so the difference ends up being only a few dollars.

By adding regular fuel the ecu now has to compensate in the change of A/F mixture resulting it to retard the timing...if it a one time thing no big deal. However, if its something consistently done at every fill up it will perform poorly or shorten the life of the motor.

If it pings, go higher.

I went reg except turbo, that was prem. Now I'd go E85 and high boost :)

I know with my 05 Acura TL, it pinged with anything other than Premium, so I would recommend keeping it at that.
