Gear selector

Rebuilt the tranny in my sons car an reinstalled. The problem is it will go from park thru d3. I can run thru all the selectors an when I put in d4 it will drive an shift fine. It will not go past d3. I physically can't move the selector to d1 or d2. It was fine before I pulled tranny aside from second gear slipping which I found the problem after teardown. I don't think the cable is bad but before I spend 80 bucks on a new cable is there anything else it could be

You could try checking the shift lock to see if it is where it needs to be.
