Is there such a thing as high temp chrome dipping?
You mean chrome that can handle high temp? I think normal chrome would be fine for this application, valve covers don't get very hot. I have often used non-high temp paint for valve covers and I think chrome could handle heat better than that. I mean, you see plenty of chrome valve covers for motorcycles and American V8's.
I just like the look of polished aluminum better. I concerned trying to take this to a shop but I would need two holes welded and just decided to paint it. I know more than a few how have had it done for $50-100. Not bad considering paint can get up to $30-35 pretty quickly, even with basic rattle can Duplicor engine paint, when you considering stripping, primer, color, clear, and sand paper.
