I know the H22A is closed deck vs H22A4 is an open deck...

I was wondering if you guys would think it would be ok to turbo on an A4?? I wanna run a turbo on a stock motor for a lil while at like 6-8 psi? I just dont wanna blow it up should I just save and get a H22A block and go that route or what do you guys think? I've read alot about how the ringlands are mostly the H's weak point and that's why alot of turbo H's fail but I never hear about the difference between A and A4? Im just worried... Im used to all motor but I wanna try the turbo route.

It's more so the frm sleeves on the H22, if you tune a h22, H22A or H22A4 on low boost it can live and peform well for a long time. I would go with a H22 over the a4 since it can take a little bit more and it's also cheaper. If you plan to turbo the motor stock just make sure your using like AEM ems or Hondata and get a good tuner to tune your ride and you should be fine. If you plan on building the H22 it's going to cost you some big $$$ and I would sleeve the block but if not you should be fine if you just want a little bit of a boost and are not chasing crazy numbers. This subject has been covered on here and many websites I'm sure you will find so much more info.

thanx man... I already have the H22a4 swapped into my car Im just gettin kinda bored with it now.. I've been reading alot and I know the frm sleeves are weak but most ppl said that the ringlands go out before they screw up the sleeves... I was jus wantin sumthin a little more... know what I mean?

but I might just go ahead and buy another h22 n build it since this is my DD car.. I cant afford down time... would you trust like a block guard? I think that's what it's called..
but thanx man... I thought I'd get the great "search" response.. I jus didnt know if the A had a stronger block than the A4.. but thanx for the advise and Im glad you gave it to me cause you got sum sick stuff done with your car.

The only difference is the A is closed deck whereas the a4 is open. The FRM sleeves arent weak, its the rings that will go long before the sleeves will. The FRM sleeves only suck b/c you can't put forged pistons in them except for Mahle's specially coated pistons which to be quite honest, I still wouldn't trust.

Why don't you try finding another head and building that or something instead of just going straight to boost. Or try some autoX or road racing with the car before just trying to get more power out of it.

I would love to auto x but we dont have any tracks around here for miles n miles... we have a drag track and thats it... Im still torn between all motor n turbo but why Im kinda siding with a turbo is cause the sky is the limit on power with those and if built right it can make tons of power and our cars are kinda on the heavy side unlike a civic I jus wanna get sum where in the 12's but I dont think I can all motor. but I love all motor set ups everything about them is awesome I just dont think my goal can be achieved all motor.

Your goal can happen all motor but it's going to cost you. Are you obd2 right now? any how as long as the motor is in good health and you have a good EMS and tuner you should be fine on low boost but we all know turbo and Nos is not the best thing to use on H-series motors but if done right you should be fine for a while. BlkCurrantKord is right about using the Mahle Gold series pistons, I've heard mixed reviews on them. I was even going to go with them after a while and gave up on the turbo project. NA or turbo it's going to cost you well to get it done right with the H22 but it can be done.

if you want to get more out of your car maybe you should upgrade your suspension. get a one piece strut tower bar, upgrade your sway bars, get poly urethane bushings, etc. that may be one reason your car feels a little boring or lifeless.

since you've already upgraded the engine the first place you should be looking to get the most out of your investment is the one place that makes or breaks cars, your suspension set up. Lotus doesn't pour their money into big *** engines, most aren't bigger than ours, but they kill themselves over their suspension tuning.

thats just my .02 since our cars are not meant for spirited driving your coilovers aren't going to be doing as much as they might on other cars
