turn on your car then disconnect the battery, if it shuts off right away its the alternator..

What's the temperature like out there? If it's hot and it's taking numerous times to start your car it could be the main relay. Try turning your key to the ON position, and if you don't hear the fuel pump engage, try again. If the next time, or after a couple tries, you do hear the fuel pump engage and the car starts, it's definitely your main relay.
Your car dying while driving is most likely the ignition switch. Check to see if it's been done on your car already and if not, take it to the dealer immediately.
