How to check VIN number on a car for free

Just wondering if anyone knows of a site that I can check for a vehicle vin number information. I have to find out about a car that I found to see the history of it. Every site I enter the vin number it asks for a credit card number to pay for information. If anyone knows of a site that is free let me know. Thanks
