I'm slipping

Well, my transmission is. On the way to Boston from NYC, my car just started revving high, as if I accidentally moved the shifter from D4 to D3. Noticed that at a stop, after the vehicle came to a complete stop, there would be a huge jolt that would move the car while the brake pedal was depressed.

After getting gas & letting it cool a bit, I got back on the highway. Barely got off the entrance ramp when it started happening again. This time, the Check engine light came on as well. Made it to the next exit where there was an autozone luckily. Pulled two codes that were def transmission related. Tranny fluid dipstick had a burnt smell to it. Fck, my tranny is shot.

Had to limp it back home at about 50 mph @ 2000 RPM on the highway (luckily I wasn't far), which wasn't too bad. It wasn't until I got back to Brooklyn on city streets where it really started to slip pretty badly and annoy the crap out of me.

Now it's sitting parked at my dad's. Got a few quotes at local shops for rebuilds, anywhere from $900/950-1100 for rebuilds with a 1 year warranty. Tim quoted a price of over $2000 for a brand new tranny from Honda. Haven't looked to find any used trannys yet since my dad is skeptical about using one and it failing, then having to pay for the installation of another one at cost.

Car has 124,000 original miles, tranny fluid was changed (drain and fill, not flushed) at about 120k. Had I heeded Jmiller's advice and not changed it if I had no knowledge of prior history with changes, I might not be in this predicament.

Sorry to hear Brandon, what a bummer. Honestly though, the estimates you mentioned for a rebuild are among the lowest I've heard. Would you consider a 5spd swap at all?

Dude the qoutes you got are actually pretty good ... I paid $1,200 for mine and all the guy gave me was 6 months of warranty ... now its a year and a half later and guess what ... This crap is slipping now ... I'm just going to go with a 6 speed I've heard that the most I'll spend converting will be $2,000 is this true Redryder? In a month or so I'll start buying parts for the swap. You should do the same Nismode ... Get the best out of your car Anyway good luck on what ever you decide

Same exact thing happened to me this past weekend. Along with my car shaking at a stop, my D4 light was blinking. its happened to me twice in the past week. My dad doesn't believe me tho since its only happened to me and not him . i got quoted for about $1,500 at one shop so the estimates u got are pretty good.

If manual swap isn't an option, I would just get a rebuild. You got a fairly decent priced quote and plus, I trust a rebuild over a swap from a donor car anyday. It must be the heat that's been going on that's been killing everyone's transmissions this summer. Luckily, I recently changed to the Honda ATF-DW1 and got a tranny cooler so hopefully mine won't take a dump on me. The DW1 is pretty good, I noticed faster shifts and quicker warm up times for the transmisisons so I would recommend it to those who are going to be doing drain and fills in the future.

if it's an I4 tranny, it shouldn't be too difficult to replace... at least u dun have a v6

I thought about it, but I'd have to source all the parts and then find a shop to do it...plus I think it'd kill the resale value of the car. Not to mention my dad just thinks it'd be better to just to a rebuild and/or just get a new vehicle.

I'm afraid that with a rebuild and the way/amount I drive, it'll start again at some point. Tired of dumping maintenance money into the car. It's a love/hate relationship haha

Mine wasn't blinking, I don't recall it at least.

Funny I was looking to DIY install a tranny cooler, but the Autozone I went to near my house didn't have the one I wanted, the one in Westchester that I stopped at had it, but it was moot at that point.

Thanks for the words guys. I just gotta figure out a way to pay for it you know. Soo much maintenance needs to be done to this car, and this just doesn't help. That same $ could have taken care of everything else that needs to be done on the car.

lmao i know what you mean thats why i'm saying just go stick ... i mean how many manaul cars have you heard having transmision problems? the most common will be replacing clutch ... The whole reason why i just want to go manual is because i dont want to spend another 1200 on a rebuild and then it crap out on me again ... Can someone let me know if converting a v6 to manual will be around the $2g's range like I was told ... (with labor) For your i4 I bet will be way cheaper and easier .. DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT lolz

thats why i never even touch my tranny fluid i just add some if needed because im the third owner so who knows what the other guys have done so i just play it safe.
