Seems to be no rhyme or reason for when it will start?

You said "sometimes" is resolved by going through all the gears. What other ways, if any, can it be resolved? You said it won't crank. So, will the starter simply not engage and the engine not crank? Or will the starter engage and the engine not fire up?
