Here's a shot that seemed like it had potential when I took it, but the more I look at it, the more boring it becomes. The tree in the foreground to the right doesn't help... Any thoughts? Suggestions?

it looks like you took color from everything except the reflection, but i would keep the color on the cabin itself, because it seems to get lost in the trees surrounding it, or at least keep it a little bit saturated.

same thing I was going to say... if the cabin's the subject i'd try to put a little more focus on it

main thing that bothers me is that the shallow depth of field leaves alot of things out of focus....which you kinda realized when you said the trees to the right don't add to it....but other than that...the rest could be made up for in a creative edit to match what kind of pic you want it to be...i would suggest a little desaturation and higher contrast on some of the woods to bring a bit of detail...

I'm hearing something along the lines of...

_MG_3846-copy.jpg

Contrast bump, and increased saturation on the cabin to make it more pronounced...

i'd crop the pic. cut the oof trees to right. then trim slightly on top/bottom.

then convert to b&w, some dodging and burning, add more contrast.

You Digital SLR guys are serious. I see I have much to learn. I thought the pic looked pretty good, although the retouched one looks better with the cabin contrast adjusted.
