When your stopped and put it in first how high does the pedal go until it hits. If its real high your clutch may need to be replaced.

Even with the pedal all the way to the floor its still grabbing. To get the car from neutral to first I actually have to shut off the car put in in gear and restart it.

Sounds like an internal leak in either the slave or master. How many miles are on the clutch that's in there?

I don't know how many are on the clutch. If I had to guess it's probably original to the car which has 133,000 miles on it. I actually just got the car last Tuesday.

I agree it does sound hydraulic.. Well it might as well be the first place to start and the cheapest, just change both master and slave see what happens. Keep the old ones for spares if it does nothing. Or clean them up and return them.

My mechanic said I can bring it up later today and he would be happy to take a look at it. Hopefully it is just one of the cylinders.

Unfortunately he says it's the clutch, but on the bright side the guy I bought it from offered to buy me the clutch kit for it so I just have to pay for labor.

The other day I was moving the car from up by the garage down to the barn to put it away and after applying a little extra force trying to get it out of reverse without turning off the engine it finally went into neutral and it went into first very easily just like it should. So I drove it around the block and it was still working. I've since put about 200 miles on it and the only problem with shifting is occasionally the clutch will slip a little bit before grabbing on completely. Any idea what is going on?

I don't think it's the clutch at all. That doesn't make sense. Pedal on the floor and it is engaging? I'm not saying the clutch is good but I am saying that it is not the clutch causing your issue. I would have someone press the clutch pedal and see if the slave cylinder goes in while the pedal is fully pressed, if it does it is one of three things. Slave, master, or hose.
