During our recent cold snap I went out to dinner and on my way back when i got in the car, the car wouldnt start. It clicks once and that's it. The dash lights are fine and the headlights are fine too....so I didnt think it was battery related....in any case I got a jump from a friend and somehow the car started and I was able to drive home....the next morning I tried to start the car and same thing - one click and no crank....I tested the battery and it appeared a little low, I went to the store and had it replaced under warranty....put it back in the car and cleaned up the terminals and same thing - one click, no crank! I'm stumped. I checked all the cables and made sure they were tight...also checked the connection to the starter and starter solenoid.

I'm starting to think its my starter - it's the original starter with 180k miles. Is it time to replace?

Anything else I can try before I order a new starter from ebay or rockauto....?

If its the starter...not sure why jumping it got it started....

The battery to starter is reading 12.54v

The solenoid cable (small one) is reading 11.96v when key is in starting position (turning the key).

wouldn't the fact that the starter and solenoid are both getting voltage imply that it's not a problem with any relays?

I repaired the main relay this summer cuz it was having a hard time starting on hot days...I suppose I could take it out again and have a look for any cracked joints from the cold...

tried banging on the starter with no luck....it's cold outside so I gave up after a few hits with the hammer.

If you hear a click when turning the key most likely u have a starter solenoid problem and the starter is bad . If you don't hear anything at all when u turn the key and ur battery is good u might have a solenoid feed wire issue.
