Simplicity,
If they aren't going to cut you any kind of deal, DON'T have your tranny replaced at Honda. Go to individual transmission stores and you can get a much better deal.

Yeah I thought about that...but I think that taking it to Honda (they're quoting me $2800 for everything labor + rebuilt tranny) I get a better warranty 3 yrs or 36k miles I think...and I know for sure that it is a Honda Rebuilt, rather than some unknown brand from a local shop (prolly better than Honda's though, lol) and plus if it breaks again I can always take it back to the dealer free of charge or if I sell the car it will at least look better to the buyer...

what do you guys think? local shop or stick with honda?

Well you can't choose yet lol. You have to first check the local shop and see what they're offering. You can't just assume you'll get the same prices I did, $900 and $1600, 6 months warranty and 1 year. Just double check, but it should be similar to those prices. The most valuable thing I see in going to Honda to fix it is that 3 year warranty. It definitely will look good to the buyer and it will place confidence in yourself. But definitely, before choosing, try looking at some individual transmission shops and see what they have to offer.

Yeah definitely lots of fluctuations with local shops -i've had some places quote $1300-$1800, even dealerships have some slight fluctuations in the labor they charge. The car is at a dealership right now that is 150 miles or so away from where I live (I was going on a trip when it broke down) so I have to think whether it is worth the trouble to tow it back here so I can take it to the shop I normally go to for major maintenance...or try to find some local shops in sacramento and hopefully get lucky with a reputable one...or just let the dealer do it (their labor is cheaper than the bay area).

Of course I'm hoping for the best...that Honda will step up, but I know that with my situation (mileage and age of car) they don't have to do anything.

If you want to save yourself the trouble, time, and effort, just have the dealer do it. You seem most confident in that choice anyway.

Good news! Honda decided to pay for everything except the labor cost.

This is considering I have over 100k miles and a 1998 model. I was hoping they'd pay for the parts but never thought they would cover the entire cost of the rebuilt tranny. I'm thrilled...although it took almost a month to resolve...the result is above my expectations.

what was the reason for only charging you labor?

There was no reason why they only charge me labor. It was completely out of good will. All i did was I showed them that I had properly maintained the vehicle and the transmission with service records. I followed the normal driving conditions maintenance schedule as recommended by my local honda dealership service dptment.
