the 50-55mm lenses give you an approximate field of view and similar aperture value to an 85mm.

the issue you'll run into is that the 50mm focal length isn't identical to an 85mm, and you will have to be physically closer to the subject.

hmm...where to start...do you want to go cheap or high quality or looking for a certain bokeh? ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...you have a nikon, right? yeah, i think so. ok, you'll need to look for lenses that have little "rabbit ears" on the aperture ring. you'll have to guess at the exposure and/or take a pic to set it since your camera won't meter with older lenses.

to begin...look for a nikkor 50/1.8...dime a dozen, cheap, fast

actually...i think i have a cheap old hanimex 28/2.8 somewhere. decent performer. like $15-20 shipped if you want it...i just have to dig it out :Smoker:

28 isn't wide at all lol...I find myself backing up all the time.

I'd ideally like to get the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 lens, but that's expensive. I saw this as a possible alternative...

Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 FOR CANON - Like New ! - $300 (Battery Park)
those seem to be highly regarded. i've never used one so i can't really comment on it. if you buy stuff used, you can usually get your money back if you sell it. try it out :)

canon has a ridiculous number of adapters available. you can even use older nikon lenses but not older canon ones :lawl:

well then...you could try and hunt down an 85/2. orrr...there are a ton of 135s out there.

i might have taken some but i have no clue what/where they are...it was almost 2 years ago since i last saw the lens :lawl: the lens was a "pressure fit" in my pentax so i never took it outside :lawl:

Anyone looking for lens advice needs to post what camera they have! :lawl:

On a Canon crop the 17-55 2.8 IS is the bees knees, the Tamron seems like a good alternative for half the price.

If you are on a strict budget and want something useful the new version of the Canon kit lens (the one with IS) is a very good lens. 18-55 is a great range, the IS works well and it's very sharp (relatively speaking). For $100 I think it is one of the best values that Canon offers.

The 50 1.8 is fast and cheap and that's about it. It is razor sharp stopped down, but that's not the point of a fast prime! It's built like a toy and costs as much as the 18-55 IS. On a crop body the 50mm focal length is not that useful ...at all. My 50 1.8 is BY FAR my least used lens.

If you can only go to 28mm right now, I would hate to go straight to a UWA like the 10-22 or similar. Those are very specific use lenses. Unless your normal shooting requires this range I see it as a gimmick. Like the 50 1.8 you could make this seem fun for a while, but unless you really start to love that style it is going to quickly turn into a "gimmick". On a 1.6x crop body the "normal" focal length is around 30mm. Having one lens that only goes to ~20mm and another that starts at 28mm gives you a big hole right around the area that would presumably used most (both sides of "normal"). Not useful, IMO. Especially if you only have 1 body, there would be a lot of switching.

I'd look at what focal length YOU need and go from there. Buying a faster lens doesn't help if it's you're looking for something wider and an ultra wide doesn't help if you want a wider walkaround (unless you force it to be your walkaround). If you want versatility and shoot a crop the 18-55 range is what I'd go for. Never can go wrong with lighting though...

^All my opinions. Take them with a grain of salt. I have the 18-55 IS and the 17-55, both get used a lot. The 18-55 IS comes out when I need something light and small. I also have the 50 1.8 and after the first 2 weeks it's been sitting in my bag. I've used UWA's and it wasn't my style, but I might try one again after I get more lighting...
