I suppose 17-18 difference isn't much, I'm more worried about f/3.5 max aperture vs. f/4.USM focus.
The 17-85 is a class above the 18-55 IS, but the 18-55 IS isn't a bad lens for the money.
The 18-55 IS is really sharp. A lot better than the non IS that came with my XTi. I'm watching a couple auctions on ebay for a few diff lenses (50 f/1.8 mk1 (some with old film bodies), 17-85 USM f/4 IS, 35mm f/2).1/3 of a stop is 1/3 of a stop. Nothing more than that.
17-85's focusing ability and build quality is far ahead of the 18-55. But the 18-55 is quite sharp and has a very usable range and dirt cheap.
Does Tokina make good lenses?? I was at a camera store yesterday and the 17-55 is about 1300 new while the Tokina 17-55 f2.8 is just like 600. Granted it didn't seem to focus as fast. But that doesn't matter 2 much for that range. I just want something that has the low fstops for lighting
