I had someone recommend a Polarizing Filter because I'm off to a tropical island for a few weeks. What are your thoughts??

what happened? were you using it without hood?

After shooting the D1GP event the entire lens/filter/camera was coated in burnt rubber, pebbles, dust, dried water, etc from shooting trackside in the rain (with a cover over the camera/lens and lens hood on). I gave it a thorough cleaning but must have missed something small on the filter because when I finally used the cleaning solution and a lens tissue on the filter it put a light scratch that never came out. It doesn't show up in pics so I don't worry about it, but I'm glad I scratched my $60 Hoya HMC filter, and not the front element of a $2k L lens. :p

well you can use one, and once again everyone has their opinion on UV/Polarizing filters. some like it some don't. If you have some money to spend, buy a good one, not a cheap stuff. Hoya is what most people buy.

thats pretty much the only filter i use with digital. it'll make the colors more vibrant and most importantly, will cut the glare so you can take pics through glass and especially water.

just like polarized sunglasses...the filter will have the same results.

get a good one like a hoya or B&W. you probably don't need a top-of-the-line one...figure on spending right around $100 for a good one.

kinda expensive :skurred:

that said...i did pay like $20 for the lumiquest mini-softbox. its this kind of thing you can DIY, but the pre-made solutions are so much more elegant.

thanks for the heads up...ill go check my local shop for one :)
