What brand of UV?
Unless you're doing something that you need to protect your front element than you most likely wont need it.
But good pickup on the 50

The nifty fifty (Canon version at least) has a very recessed front element. Especially with the hood you may find that you don't need it. It is my only lens that I do not use a UV filter on.

I want to sell my zooms for primes, but that would be an example of a bad financial decision...
