Haha. If you can find the metal MkI, go for it. I thought mine was losing sharpness too because I dropped it, but I'm almost positive it's just because 1.8 is a huge aperture and the light entering the lens is extra unorganized (compared to your average f/3.5 maximum aperture lens). Apertures between f/8 and f/11 are usually sharpest in the lens' aperture range, so you lose you low light speed to gain sharpness.

I found one on CL, but the price made go whoaaaa. I'd rather get the 1.4 if I was spending money on something with the same focal length.

Decisions, decisions. I have so many options as to what to save up for my next lens. 70-200mm 2.8 IS? 11-16 2.8 Tokina/10-22mm Canon? 35/85mm f1.8? hmmm.

The 70-200 is awesome, but at the same time I don't know if it's worth it if you don't shoot sports (or hardcore studio work like Ray). Like, when I shot my wedding I needed the reach, but when I was shooting the reception it was too damn long for anything. I bet a 28-135/2.8 or whatever it is would have been perfect.

I agree on the 50, those MkI aren't cheap and you might as well get the newer, better one. Pony up the cash for the 1.2!!!! hahaha.

So did you rent the 70-200 then? IS there even a fast midrange zoom like that for Canon?

24-70 2.8 is a really good length for events. I'll own one eventually lol

The 70-200 2.8 IS was the lens used for a good portion of the wedding I assisted last week. The 24-70 was the other lens. Granted this was on a full frame 5D, but still. He also used the 16-35 2.8 L, for like two shots haha

It was so cool, the videographers were all using Canon 7Ds with steadycam rigs and Zeiss manual focus lenses. One had the 70-200 2.8 IS on it with a 1.4 extender as well, standing far away all the time. They said the quality with the 7D's HD video with L/Zeiss lenses was the same, if not better, than the $40k+ video camera setups they were using before. Sorry I changed the subject, haha

Yeah, I rented the 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS, still amazing, especially when paired with the 550EX II flash.

28-135/3.5-5.6 IS USM, 24-70/2.8L IS USM, 24-105/4L IS USM are the fastest of Canon's midrange lenses, the first is the 40D/50D kit lens.

definitely get an 85mm. my 90mm is a macro and only f/2.5...i kinda want an f/1.4 like the bower/opteka/vivitar/etc for around $300. i might settle for a pentax 85/2 for like $200.

a 50mm is good for portraits, but an 85mm takes it to a new level.

if you want to find hidden 50/1.8s with a metal mount, just look at film canons on CL/ebay with bad pics. the distance window in the MK 1s is easy to spot.

I have a 430EX, I wanna get an additional 550EX flash. I have the 28-135mm lens, I used that as my 'wide' till I got another kit lens haha.

So another lens to think about (24-70). Lol. I'd have crazy overlap with my 28-135mm lens. What did they do for microphone inputs?

Also, the 7D has been something I've lusted on since it was announced. I want to upgrade from my XTi, and I was thinking either 30 or 40D, but the 7D looks reaaaallly good. People say that it doesn't make sense to spend that much on a crop sensor when I could prob pick up a used 5D for that money. But the 7D is just amaaaazinggggg

They had microphones attached to the hotshoe, along with wireless ones worn by whoever was speaking at the time. Very cool stuff to see being used behind the scenes. I can't wait to see the video/pics from the wedding.

i'd show you some pics taken but i dont really have "consent" per se. i took em but wasn't planning on posting them.

keep in mind the 24-70 is a constant f/2.8 and its fricken huge. i have an 18-55 3.5-5.6 kit lens with major prime overlap 16/2.8, 28/2.8, 28/2.5, and 3 50mm's at f/2, f/1.7, and f/1.4 i just love primes.

the 7d is mehhhhh. too many pixels. 12-14 is the sweet spot. it's 100% NOT crazy to spend money on good crop camera since (it's getting there, at least) the only benefit of a FF sensor is the depth of field. in a year or less, that's where we'll be.
