Alright so i see that some people here on the board are having a bit of trouble with their trunk rattling because of their subs. I had the same problem when i got my sub in my car and one day i couldt take it anymore cuz i hate to hear cars that have subs in them and their trunk sounds like it is about to fall off because of the bass. N E ways......well one day i decided to brainstorm and come up with a remedy for this common problem.......and sure enough i did!!! Ok so this is a pretty simple DIY to get the rattling to stop. Here is what you need..........

1. 2-3 cans of Great Stuff Insulating Foam
2. 1 can of underbody sound deadener
3. tape
4. newspaper

Now to the fun part

PROCEDURE:

1) Spray foam in all holes and hollow areas on the trunk lid. There are quite a few of them and they take quite a bit of the foam. But be careful because the foam expands alot!!!!

2) Let the foam expand, dry, and harden.......what i did so that it came out even is that in the places where there were hole that i didnt want the foam to come out of......i placed a piece of tape over it to keep the foam in.....after the foam had dried i simply removed it.

Now comes the more time consuming part.

3) Now you are going to spray the sound deadener over the entire trunk lid so be sure to tape up and cover all of the places you dont want to get overspay on. Be sure to also do the rear window

3b) you can also spray the sound deadener on the rear deck where the speakers are so that it stops some of the vibrations from the speakers.....but i will not recommend using the foam up there.....just my preference.

4) Let dry for a bit and apply additonal coats as desired.....i did about 4-5 coats.

5) To spice things up a bit and to make things look a bit nicer i went to the local junk yard and got two H badges and stuck them on the trunk after everything was dried to give it that custom look......the pic shown below was an outline of an H that i originally did but didnt like how it came out and opted for the junkyard H instead.

6) Enjoy no more rattling!!!!!!!

NOTE: the only rattling you may still hear is from the liscense plate of your car.......this also is a simple fix......go to your local audio store and they have a "dyna mat material" that you simply stick onto the back of your plate and it stops the rattling.......forgot the name of it though....i also saw it at circuit city.

So now 6thgenners...........i have let out my secret so go try it and let me know what you think!!!!!!! It worked flawless for me as well as my buddy who had tremendous noise in his camry......So now the secret is out!!!!!!!!!!

be like it is
definitely helps out and looks pretty good too :) whos going to cover theirs with carpet or p/leather? that would look badass as well.

dynamat and undercoating are the same basis...in fact, there are asphalt-based sprays like cascade but are waaay more expensive than undercoating.

ironically, the only rattle on the back of my car is the spoiler's brake light :ugh: solve that one lol

When i had my Hyundai elantra i just used a bit of weather stripping where the bottom of the trunk meets the bumper. It worked great. But looking at the car from the rear you could see 3 little black rectangeles which may or may not be suitable for you guys.

I also put some of the stuff that you line cabinets and drawers with behind the liscense plate to stop that rattle. There where also a couple of rubber bands keeping pressure on stuff in side the trunk too.

Very cheap and effective. although a little less classy than your idea up there.

another tip- i found a LOT of my vibrations were coming from my trunk latch and rattling up into the lid....i took black cloth hockey tape and wrapped the hook part on the car (not the lid) with it a few times. closed the trunk (you'll notice its a lot tighter) then opened it and wrapped it w/ a few more layers....it makes your trunk latch up very tight and doesnt allow for the latch to rattle against the hook

Is Great Stuff really necessary? I've heard some bad things about it.

Can't we just apply some spray, or a deadening mat and call it a day?

Trini, nice write-up, thanks for sharing. I was planning on doing something similar as well. I have a huge roll of B-Quiet that I planned to use in the trunk.trunk lid, but I may require both your method and the B-Quiet. Appreciate you letting the 'secret' out. I like the way the trunk lid looks, actually, the colour of the deadening spray is a nice matte black colour, which would work out well......
