Temperature Needle Going Through "H" and Over

I was wondering if anyone has experienced their temperature needle in the dashboard to go up the "H" and beyond within 15 minutes of ignition. The thing is, I have my check engine light on. I was thinking if it is connected to the temperature needle problem. Tomorrow morning, I will add antifreeze/coolant in the radiator and observe if that will fix it. The car is not over-heating like you would expect it to be since the needle is over the "H." So has anyone experienced the same problem with their car???

I also have an LED conversion in my console including the dash.

By the way I have a 2000 accord coupe 5spd.

This weekend, I will get an oil change and have the code for the check engine light read and hopeful cleared if there is no problem.

Thanks.

just because the needle is over the H doesnt mean it can't be overheating..and the leds in your dash probably didnt mess anything up.

first thing i would do is check the coolant level, if its low then just add new coolant. you may want to check the quality of the liquid if you have never changed it before. the check engine light may come on because the car has overheated and the car would like you to "check its engine" or better yet, add/change the coolant fluid.

after you have diagnosed the coolant and theres still problems with the check engine light then you may want to go somewhere like autozone to have them read the error code for you (they do it for free) and then see what happens from there

I am having the same problem on my 98 sedan v6. The Temperature gauge goes well over the "H" a few minutes after I start the car, whether I drive or not.
It seems my car is overheating but is not. the gauge will go back down whenever i start driving and then if I'm at a stop light it will go back up, My fans turn on fine and when I pop the hood the radiator hose don't seem to have any pressure and my coolant is filled.
My only difference with your problem is that I do not have a check engine light on.
When i took to my mechanic he said it is most likely the Coolant Temperature Sensor. So i will try to replace it today as he said it is an easy thing to do and I'll let you know how that works out for me.

But i'd say you should def. take care of that check engine light first and then go from there.

Here's a pic of where the sensor is located on my car

I have the exact opposite problem. Sometime my temp needle just sits below the "c". But it nothing a swift smack to the dash doesn't fix.

Ok....Just replaced the Temperature sensor on my accord and I still have the same problem. Needle still goes all the way up to the " H " but the car is not overheating. I even swapped out the cluster/speedometer with a good working one to rule out the gauges malfunctioning.

I did however notice that the wire that connects to the sensor was somewhat damaged. It was showing the inside of the wire itself.

I guess i'll go see if the dealer carries that wire and how much. It'll be a pain in the *** to get it replaced because I gotta remove a bunch of covers, but'll give it a try.

If anybody has any Idea what else it could be please just post it and i'll give it a try. because if switching this wire with a new one doesn't work I have no idea what else to try.

this is the pic of the wire I was talking about earlier.

Na, Apparently the wire is just for signal, so whether it is exposed or not it will still work.
My problem was solved. My ground wire from the negative battery terminal to the chassis was lose. I tighten the bolt to another place and it fixed the problem.

what work have you done to your car so far ?

damn, that is a lot of work already.
Have you tried swaping out your cluster ? just to rule out a bad one.
