if you can't afford a cam, like one from bisi, head work isn't really going to do much, you might as well invest in nitrous or save up and go turbo.... or save your money and mod a future car/beater car

I am really confused by how many conflicting things people have said.

First things first. Every engine from every manufacture can get more power by doing nothing more than tuning the car. On American V6s, V8s and Trucks it is much much more common and you will see a lot more gains than you would with an Accord or other small NA 4 Banger.

The reason for this is because every manufacture tunes an engine for reliability and MPG, not for 100% Performance.

Intakes and Exhausts DO add HP. However, its not always PEAK, just where the power is. How you make that power is by having more air-flow, your actually LEANING out your motor, so you make more power, but you're putting stress on the motor. Any Engine modification that you do, with the exception of painting your valve cover (1,000+ hp) will not see large gains on ANY FACTORY TUNE, no matter WHAT Platform or Manufacture.

In order to tune the car you will need to get an ODB1 Conversion Harness and a Chipable ODB1 ECU, OR pay the money for the HonData, which I would never do... Factory Honda ECU FTW. Most shops that I know of (in Canada) are around 200$ per hour.

That being said, F23 Blocks are indestructable. My head is warped (I am 99% sure) and the car still lasts while lapping and beating the **** out of it. Drinks a lot of oil and coolant, but it works. However PARTS are hard to find. Its much easier to find parts for Preludes and Civics... Cost Effectiveness is not as good for an Accord... But you have bragging rights when your Accord smokes a lesser car. lol.

#2 -- Gearing is EVERYTHING

If your Accord made 600whp, you would be able to top out 5th Gear at 160mph or whatever stupid gearing its at. Buy yourself a Prelude Transmission... The M2S4 from a H23 92-96 is the best bet, because you can swap out your Accord 5th for Highway Cruising.

Your transmission is nothing more than a power modifier. It takes the engines power and puts it to the road using gear ratios. Think of putting your bycicle in the tallest gear possible, and then trying to start pedelling. Its HARD to start moving from a stop, takes a while. Put it in a shorter gear, and you start going a lot quicker (although lower speed). The Transmission is the same thing. LONG Gears are not good for NA Performance. TURBO on the other-hand is amazing, because you can hold a gear longer and use maximum boost and power without having to lift off to shift.

I have to get back to work but I hope this fixes some of the confusing things I saw in this thread.

Well put. I think the majority of comments about intakes and exhausts were relating to potential results and the lack of satisfaction without tuning. I, for one, wish I would've been talked out of buying my intake, exhaust, cat, and header because it did nothing significant for my car but make it loud. I could've used that money to fund what is becoming a really expensive build, now that I'm well aware of what it takes to actually make decent power.
