And the Lucas oil stop slip solution, or Lubegard won't make a difference. It might actually make things worse depending on what's inside of it; your car would be the experiment. It definitely won't solve any transmission issue should it occur.

As a Honda employee, I say drain and refill 3x, change the solenoid, and your prob should disappear. And use Honda genuine fluid.

hey guys, thought I add to this thread instead of creating a new one.
this is my first vehicle with an automatic transmission. from what I've been reading honda automatic transmissions are sensitive.
my decision is to change my transmission oil, of course with honda oem fluid. before I go through with this i would like to get some input from the members here as to whether I should go through with this or possible alternative methods.

vehicle information:
* 98 4 cylinder f23a1
* 167k original miles.
* transmission shifts absolutely fine, with no problems.
* oil was change by the last owner at 81k, unfortunately with valvoline oil.
* oil is quite clean not dark at all.

all input is very much appreciated, thank you.

D(rain) & F(ill)

Until what's in (dipstick) looks like what came from the bottle. Wallyworld prolly uses dex3, hopefully with an additive that makes it Honda, I don't. Dealer has the real stuff. At 23xK with original trans, on a V6, doing this since 13xK. Also I'm an ASE master tech.

What exactly is the deal with using only honda's transmission fluid? are there
particular additives that they use that other ATFs don't?

I mean off the bat, not knowing anything, you could make the claim that because
its designed and used for hondas, it would be the best bet.
I just want to know if there is more to know when it comes to why its better to use.

Also what price difference exist between the honda option and a average ATF from autozone?

Look at Autozone's ATF options. You see Dex3, Dex4, Merc. etc...

Yes, Honda fluid is different too. There's other stuff in it, and a 3qt D&F isn't much more, but it works.

They have some stuff that is 'Universal' with too many names on the back (including Honda), expect to pay nearly as much as at a dealer.

going to the honda dealership next week to pick up some atf oil. I am just going to drain and fill and hope everything goes well.
thanks for the info. as to what is so special about honda transmission fluid versus other brands; I have no idea, but the previous owner used valvoline and for 85k miles the transmission has function perfectly fine. so the oils must be quite similar, but just to be on the safe side I will be using honda atf.

Change the transmission solenoid, my old car use to do the same exact thing. Installing a transmission cooler might benefit it for a while longer.

I didn't drain/refil because of horror stories lol.

Be prepared for a flashing d4 on your cluster.

Sorry, didn't mean to hi jack thread but my 01 sedan D4 light doesn't flash but it does disappear from time to time.
Transmission fluid D and F religiously.
Does D4 light relate to transmission solenoid??
