So I am wanting to forge the internals for my j30a1. I am doing this so that I can throw a bit of boost its way. I havn't been able to find any. Does anyone know of any or am I going to have to have them custom made. I am going to school for manufacturing technology and I'm currently learning how to program cnc machines. So if needed I could manufacture this stuff myself at my school if I had all the specs. But I really don't know where to start! Please someone give me some advice or help.

Rods are WAY too complicated. Maybe, with shtloads of work, to do stuff like make the wrist pin fit correctly based on what type it is, to worry about strength.

Even if you figure 'theoretical' strength, actual strength is key.

Destruction is the only way.

Make somethin easier. I'm trying to build an engine from scratch (litterally, not a student) my goal is to make ~1/4 hp, at ~1 liter of displacement.

My guess is that you also have an automatic transmission. I would have to suggest swapping it to a J32 with a 6 speed for starters due to the fact that those transmissions are already bad enough without adding boost to the mix.

quick search shows Pauter may have forged connecting rods for the J30A1 @ about $1200

Found no pistons on Pauter, Crower, Wiseco, or JE pistons sites; however, you can send them 1 piston and they can make a set of forged pistons...probably for around $800 to $1000 for the set.

Depending on the amount of boost you want to run, the OEM crank may be able to handle it. However, if you want a forged crank. again, you will need to send 1 to someone and have them make one for you...that will most likely be at least another $1000.

As you can see, you are at about $2500 to $3000 for those internals. You still have the turbo, piping and some sort of tuning solution like a E-manage or AEM FIC. Not sure how well the FIC will work with the J30A1 sensors.
So, you are at around another $1000 to $2000 for those parts.

Add in labor for someone to do this for you, if you can't do it yourself

So for 4-5k IN PARTS ALONE, not including labor, you will have a J30A1 that MIGHT be around 300 hp at the crank on low boost -- I don't know Forced Induction as I prefer all-motor.

1. Your tranny may or may not hold that. The 4-speed autos suck. Only way to be safe on the tranny is build the auto or swap in a manual -- that is lots more cash there also

2. The cylinder heads are pure $hit, the ports are WAYYY to small to be of any benefit for a lot of boost. And no, porting them will not help...you can however, swap on a set of J32A1 or J35A3/A4 heads. Those will work on the J30A1 short block with no modification

or, just throw on the turbo with the stock engine -- but, I am not sure what tuning solution you could go with.

I think some guys run around 8 lbs? even with the Comptech Supercharger on the J30A1, guys ran up to 8lbs safely on the internals.

just letting you know that it might get expensive to do it right.

^yup.

you'd be better off buying a J32/6 speed to start with than wasting money with your j30. If you're doing low boost then there's no point in wasting money on forged internals

I would consider swapping the transmission to manual, even that makes the 3.0 much more enjoyable. The v6 in these cars was built for economy, so most people dont build it.
