I've just installed my new Alpine head unit, JL Audio XR and VR Speakers and a 300/4 amplifier in my car, and my next project will be the subs...It was suggested to get one JL 10W7 subwoofer and a 500/1 amp. My question is will I have better sound with more or the same bass with one JL 10W7, or with (2) JL 10W3V3's with the same amp. I don't listen to much rap or R&B, so I don't want any crazy distorted bass, i just want something clean and that'll sound real good.

jl is in the middle as far as sound quality, but on the top for price. that = ftl

how much you got to spend? as of now, im recommending one 10" but im awaiting your budget. if youre going for a w7 and 500/1 i assume youve got about a grand...? there is better out there for less $$$ :)

Wow, what a gigantic waste of money. As ryan said, there's a lot better for the price out there. Kind of like Bose.

If you listen to a lot of rock/hardcore, you'll want something accurate and precise. The Alpine Type-R's, in my opinion, have great transient response. Im sure the Type-X follows suit. Check out Boston Acoustics and Infinity as well.

$2000 budget? Wow.

Well, to answer your questions, as far as one 10w7 vs two 10w3s, it would be pretty close to be honest, but generally speaking if you're going for overall output I would go with the two w3's

all that said, you don't need to spend anywhere near $2k for a sub + amp combo. how important is it to you to be able to buy locally vs. online? because there are a lot of awesome brands/products out there but you can't a lot of them locally.

So yeah, big part of what I would recommend boils down to if you would buy online, and if not where you're located.

No comment from me on that topic!

If you want the absolute best sub you can get, critical mass makes something that sounds absolutely amazing. The UL12 and UL10. They reviewed the 12" in CA&E a few months back and it got the best rating I've seen in just about ever! If you're looking for something that's still really good, but not quite $1500+ for just the sub, I'll see what else I can come up with.

The IDMax subs are awesome if you can find them. I wouldn't hesitate recommending them to anyone. I've always been a Boston Acoustic fan, but haven't heard any of their latest subs yet, so can't personally comment on them.

Thanks for the responses....The 2000 Dollar limit was what i was quoted for to have the entire dynamat insulated, sub box built, installed and the 500/1 and 10W7 (This is in Canadian Dollars). I'd prefer to get something locally, so if I have a problem (which I always seem to have) I'll have some kind of warranty, or at least someone to complain to. I've already sunk a load of money for the setup i have (And It sounds phenomenal), so I defiantly do not want to make the wrong decision or second guess myself here. The "deal" I am getting on 500/1 and 10W7's with the install is only good for 3 weeks.

nope f that "deal." if you cant get that price normally the shop doesnt deserve your money. theyre just pressuring you...thats all it is. YOURE the customer...you tell them to take it or leave it.

you can sound deaden yourself (dont use dynamat, either) which will save you some money. are there any forum members near you? are you on any audio-only forums like diymobileaudio.com?

btw: in my ~8 years of playing with car stereos, i have never had to use a warranty. i blew 1 speaker...ever...and it was an accord stock front 6.5". she put up a good fight for a year and a half and then gave up the ghost...

Then you've been lucky. I've been in it for 10 years and have had my fair share of cones detaching and amp channels cutting out. Fortunately they were under the dealer warranty and got replaced free of charge, so I don't underestimate the value of the extended warranty offered for dealer installed items.

I'd skip the dynamat as well and get something else. I've used and love hushmat. It's a bit expensive but real nice. There's a good deal going on the ED sound deadening products right now.

What other brands can you get from this dealer? JL's subs have always been a bit overpriced.
