I've had two people tell me that you apply clear coat when the paint is wet, not waiting for it to get dry. Is this BS?

I sprayed my clear when it was wet and still looks great. So I don't know which is the "proper" way. The one who told my dad that it needs to be applied on wet paint was a guy who does paint work for a living, but he's just some Spanish dude from Brentwood who does work in his garage. No certification I believe.

I do it when it's dry, never really have had any problems. If we are talking about spray paint. If we are talking about actual automotive paint, no clue, i think you have to go off the flash time if you arn't wetsanding.

I thought the paint was supposed to flash first..

Yeah, that's what i'm saying. I assume we are talking about spray paint but really, i don't see the difference, outside of a more costly mistake. I have never tried putting clear on when the paint is "wet" but i have put clear on too early. The two things that happen is either the clear has dried faster, pulling the wet, somewhat cured paint which is bad, or just weird reactions, bubbling, etc. I almost always wetsand now when i'm spraypainting something and going to the trouble to clear it so it's obviously going to be dry.

Yeah, I don't understand why you'd clear right after the paint, you need to color sand first anyway for a orange peel free finish. Then of course wet sand the clear if you want a glass like finish.
