Why do my subs sound like crap??

Which forum do you recommend? If I may ask.

It's been a few years since I frequented any audio forums but diymobileaudio.com & avsforum.com look to still be going strong. Another that I spent time on no longer exists. Sounddomain used to have forums as well

Its all about the box and RMS's.. ya ya people say ooooo i have a 5000watt speaker and a 5000watt amp..ok well thats its max..its nice numbers but if your RMS is only 200 watts .... ok well whats your RMS.. thats what is your real question is for your power.. a little off topic but ya.... If your box is too small its gonna sound like crap, and you will ruin your speaker.. if your box is too big then you will have too much space and wont get your full potential and it will sound flat.. Find a happy medium, and build your own box.. Make sure its sealed really well.. any air leaks and your gonna be pissed... I suggest a sealed box this being your first box, measure twice and cut once.. use good quality wood and terminals... do it right the first time... good luck and have fun..

Okay I set up a thread on diymobileaudio.com, maybe I can get some good ideas as to what to do. These subs seem like they can do very well with the right box.

If u dont want to spend much money just take the subs out and reseal it with silicone. Use a strong glue type. But yea those boxes are too smal for the subs. Theres not enough air flow.

You have good equipment. You just need the right box, and you will be rocking. Personally, I would put them in a ported box, but I have also been doing this stuff for 18 years. I have built more boxes than some stereo shops. If you don't get the responses you need at the other forum, I can design a box for you, complete with a cutout sheet and assembly instructions.

If u have a iPhone or iPod touch u can get a kicker app that will tell u how to make the perfect box for those subs so there's no guessing at your work.

It's all good now. I found the piece of wood that was disconnected somehow and vibrating badly. I got some ~4" wood screws from Ace and went to town on that baby. Got 4 in the back of it, it sounds great now.

So mods you can if you want. lol

if you are a n00b with car audio, i would not recommend building a box. unless its sealed, then go for it, thats easy

ive been into car audio for only 4 years and still wouldnt attempt to build a ported box, pre fab boxes work just dandy

A ported box is really easy, just need box plans... go to home depot and let them know what sizes of mdf u need and they will cut it for you (costs like 40 cents a cut tho) a home made box is the way to go (sounds better), but prefab always looks nicer haha

if your going for prefab tho, get a s/o box from crutchfield. quality you cant beat it (I just recently sold my jl 12w7 with the box i made myself and got this setup below) Doesnt knock as hard, but I didnt want a crazy loud system anymore

Is it ported? The waves the subs are giving off is to great for the amount of space in the box. LET THOSE BABIES BREATH!
