Problem when blacking out tail lights

I've heard the best way to smoke out your tail lights is to start with clear coat and add drops of black to it, till desired opacity (single stage painting). Mix it up and shoot it with a spray gun. I haven't tried it but the clear coat would be superior in terms of durability. Then you could really polish it.
