Burning oil- stuck oil ring

I bought a 2002 2.3 coupe with a burnt valve... I bought a motor off ebay for 400 bucks- I replaced the clutch and seals and some other stuff and started driving it... Found out it was burning about a quart every 4-500 miles depending on how I drove it... I tried marvial mystery oil in the crank case and the gas tank- I didn't expect good results... I got what I expected...

I was about ready to rebuild the old motor top to bottom as I like the car for my daily beater but in a last ditch effort I gave this a try...

Drove the car-
Removed the spark plugs-
Filled the cylinders with laquer thinner-
Reinstalled the plugs-
Left the car for about 16 hours-
Removed the plugs to find the cylinders almost empty and cleaner-
Drained the oil to find the laquer thinner-
Poured some oil via funnel down the plug holes-
Rotated the motor slowly over by hand-
Filled the oil pan with cheap oil and replaced the filter-
Cranked the car over to remove the excess oil-
Reinstalled the plugs-
Mixed 1 gallon blue washer fluid with 12oz of"heet" fuel additive
(Methonal and water)
Dumped it in the washer reservoir and started the car-
Routed the washer fluid line into the cruise control port on the I intake
Revved the car to between 2500 and 3k allowing it to suck past the washer pump-
Drained the oil and filled it with good oil.
I check the oil after 300 miles and it hasn't moved- I would have been adding at least a half quart of oil already.

Use this at your own risk- ill post back in a few more days.

Damn, who did the research on this? Or is this something that you just tried and discovered? Good advice for someone at wits end with bad rings.. Good luck, sounds like a sound process if you have nothing to lose by trying it!

I didn't feel like going to the store for a gallon of kerosene- didn't make it to gm to pick up the top end cleaner... I had a gallon of thinner on the shelf

I just wanted it to soften up the carbon so I could blow it away with the steam- plan was to drive under load and use the washer pump but I would have needed a check valve...

Bah, you can make a check valve, just a few brass fittings and a ss ball (home depot)!

Nah, it sounds kinda like a diy bg kit. Those things were REQUIRED on old-people-owned nissans (who NEVER should have bought v6s) with a bit of vw diesel mixed in, and a very tiny bit of water injection (more compression + hydrogen + o2) mixed in.

A bit over 400 miles on it and it's still at the top of the stick- just need to replace the distributor seal and that side of things should be good.

So I'm up to a little over 600 miles and I needed to add a half a quart... It's much better than it was- I'm getting a decent amount of pressure out of the oil fill hole also- I'm going to do a compression test tomorrow- if that shows nothing I'll do a leak down test...

I hope both of those come back good and I'll just put 2k miles on this oil and repeat my previous steps then I will switch to a slightly thicker high mileage oil as warmer temps are just around the corner...

I should note that my distributor seal still needs to be replaced.

Does the oil on these motors usually get dirty within a few hundred miles or is this most likely due to blowby?

I should note that I was driving the car harder than usual the other day when the oil dropped-

I put the car in the air to do a wheel bearing- the boots on the upper and lower ball joint were in sad shape so I ordered those and swapped those out- While I had it in the garage I checked the compression....

#1 230 #2 225 # 3 225 #4 230.... I had to top the oil off- so a quart in just about 1k-

I'm going to try one more round of cleaning and dump the oil at about 2k...

Post a pic of oil quality & run it through a filter (coffee/thin metal screen).
