Going to Look at a 2001 with a 5-spd and 95k miles tomorrow

I dont know if anyone will remember but earlier this week I had posted that I was going to look at a car that had been towed by a motorhome and only had 70k miles.... well it was pretty beat.. .dindt buy it...

But i am going to look at a Silver 2001 tomorrow with 95,000 miles and a 5 speed. Silver... sunroof... looks pretty "tip top" from the pictures... My question is, does anyone have any advice on what to look for in a car with this many miles?

Its posted at like $9,995 or something... Gave me an "internet special" of $8,995.. and via email and my phone coversation, i tried to tell him i wouldnt pay any more than $7,250... he wanted nothing to do with that... so i imagine we'll end up around $7,800 maybe...

Well my point is... Paying this much money for a car.. I need it to last me for a long time! I put on a lot of miles every year and cant have the engine crapping out on me at 150k.

How long do you fella's with "healthy engines" usually experience "Piston Slap" when you start the car cold? Because i looked at two so far and they both had the "slap" when started. ONe lasted for about a minute and the other lasted actually into the test drive after idling... I think thats a definite bad sign myself...

And can I look to get 200K out of one of this Gen engines? I had a 91 previously and the seals were just turning to crap.

I figure with the 5 speed, at least i dont have to worry about the crap tranny... but any advice on what to look for? and can I count on having this car for a loooooong time?

My car has 121K and I have no "piston slap". My car runs like brand new.

I had a 90 Accord Coupe for my first car and it ran like new with 157K on it when I sold it. Just treat it like your child and it'll last forever.

i treat my gti completely differently then my accord tho.

Make sure the timing belt & water pump have been done!!

I already asked that question and they said "we didnt do it and cant speak for the previous owner" -- So i would bet any money at all that the belt has not been changed... They didnt even really know what i was talking about when i asked at first....

But honestly.. how really important is the timing belt? I mean I'm as anal about that as anyone else... but is the belt really going to snap? I would think i could push it closer to like 140 - 150K.

Has anyone ever heard of a belt snapping? Theres a whole lotta people out there that know nothing about the existance of the belt and the car prally just runs... I dunno.. thats my perspective i guess...

I ran my belt up until 130k before I replaced it. The belt still looked like it was in pristine condition.

Now thats good to hear. I guess if the engine sounds healthy and the clutch seems good and she looks good everywhere else, it could really be a car that could last me a good length of time... Any other opinions?

I changed my belt at 110k. Better to change it early. I had my timing belt snap on my 92 camry. Just know its going to be an expense in the future.

If you can't talk the price down lower then 7k then don't even bother. Especially since your going to have to do work on it right off the bar. I've got 115k on my motor with no piston slap in the cold.
