Problem:

It has been difficult starting up my car lately, esp from a cold start. It would:
a. have a difficult time starting up
b. if it start up, the motor will stutter and shut off if I don't gas it
c. even if i step on the gas, the motor still feels like it wants to shut off

Background:
I've been having this problem for a while now, but it only feels like tht when I fil up my gas tank COMPLETELY... If I fill up 14 gallons or less, it drives fine... however, it has been happening more lately, regardless of full tank of gas or not. :eh:

Findings:
Some things I have observed:
a. After some driving (constantly revving the motor from shutting off), the car runs perfectly normal
b. I hear the fuel pump when I turn my key to ON position

Conclusion:
a. fuel pump going bad?
b. fuel filter is clogged? don't say it is not serviceable because it can be serviced :darryl:
c. main relay? It has been pretty hot in socal lately....

Any ideas?

It sounds like fuel pump might be clogged? How about EGR?

Does your motor turn over, run for a second, stutter and then die (when it acts up, that is)?

Are there any problems when driving the car?

Does the sputtering sound kind of like:

"T...t...t.....t.......TURBO......."? :whip_001:

Seriously though, could be a fuel pump issue or EGR as Steve suggested.

No DTC's?

I think it'd be pretty difficult to clog the fuel filter, unless you possibly stuffed some leaves into the fuel tank. That sock filter has lots of surface area, and a plastic 'frame' to prevent it from sucking flat.

So it's generally only an issue when the car is cold, or restarting it after a fill up?

Do you smell a lot of gas when on a cold start from the exhaust? When the car is cold, the ECU deliberately runs a rich mixture. It could be a bad coolant temp sensor, leaky injectors, sticking IACV, dirty throttle body, etc. that can cause hard cold starts.

A sticky gas pedal usually accompanies a dirty TB.

yup, sounds exactly like tht... but after some driving (revving all the way tho so the motor doesn't shut down), it drives like normal.. it even starts up normal as long as i dun leave the car off for too long.... :eh:

yes, the fuel filter in our cars are generally difficult to clog, but there are some members who actually had problems with it...

as stated above, it used to be only after a FULL TANK fillup... if i keep it under 14 gallons or less, it is fine.. but last weekend, it just kept doing the stuttering thing :eh: :squintrun:

silly g23...

i do see a lil more smoke when it stutters.... dun recall any gas smell tho... i'll check on tht later

i cleaned the TB 6 months ago, but nothing on teh other stuff u stated.. i'll check the other things u mentioned

TB is clean... no sticky pedal here :bukkake:

Clogged injectors? Crapped out fuel rail?

maybe injectors, but fuel rail? :eh: i never heard of a clogged fuel rail
