Nevermind looked it up:

Apparently you can get into Canada with a valid State I.D., however the U.S. requires a Citizen to flash a passport on return (doesn't make a lick of sense). How the hell would a U.S. Citizen be allowed into Canada and not be allowed to return? hahaha rediculous

I sent Justin a couple of links about the passport that I can try and find again and send to you. You'll be fine with a driver's licence only, though from what I read. June 1, 2009 a passport will be required.

this sounds so nice. but end of may ill already be starting my summer semester. and it would take us muuuch longer to get there than u guys, we will have to leave a few days earlier. im not sure if i can take that much time off from school.

That would be one helluva a drive for me too, though it sounds awesome. Maybe next year i will be ready for that trip.

We began production of the U.S. Passport Card on July 14, 2008.

This new travel document can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry.

The card costs $45 for a first-time adult passport applicant

I would this year but the drive is a bit much considering I won't have any vacation days for it and 25mpg on the highway is a long distance killer. To those who go have fun. I'll still being keeping tabs on this thread, maybe even talking to some of the people from the south who might be passing through.
