Sup,
Well today I was bored so I decided to clean out some boxes in my closet.
I found a 120gb IDE hard drive and a IDE to USB adapter. In my car I have a Pioneer DEH-690UB head unit and it has a USB port on the back for the Ipod and flash drives. What I was wondering is if you could give the IDE hard drive its own power supply and use the adapter if you could put the hard drive in the car to the head unit and it effectively work.

i dont see why it wouldn't work....you would just have to figure out how to access and pan through stuff on the hard drive.

wont work by just plugging it in. You need the correct OS to utilize anything off that hard-drive. Best bet would be to reformat it and use it as additional storage device. Maybe for MP3'S. You would need to convert your cars 12v lighter so a PS can power the Hard drive. That would be a HUGE storage device for mp3's. Hell with 120gb's I don't think you would ever run out of room. That would be roughly 24,000 songs of storage at 5megabyte per song avg.

yes it can work. im not so sure reformating will be necessary. flash drive are FAT format (pre windows xp basically) but if the hard drive is formated as NTFS it should still read it just as long as your file names arent very long. just delete everything off the hard drive that isnt a song. u should be able to put them in folders in order to keep them organized. the head unit should just treat it like a big flash drive.
like a couple of other guys said, you'll need a power converter but also do your research for externel enclosures to make sure you get a good one (www.newegg.com). let us know how it works out for you

Buy an internal hard drive enclosure that turns your internal hard drive into an external (USB). I got mine from best buy. Format it. Put music on it. Buy a power converter so you can plug it into your outlet. Pretty sure the headunit would just treat it as a giant flash drive.

Thanks Guys. I'll eventually get around to it sometime this week. I am going to go the safe route tho and order a enclosure for it, to protect it better from static, dust, moisture, and vibrations. Oh, I recovered some music I had on one of my old computers and now I have around 90gbs of music. Honestly tho I am going to see if it works if it does yay if not oh well. I'll more than likely get tired of scrolling through 90gbs of music while I am driving, and switch back to my handy 8gb flash drives.
