...so I went to get get my front brakes replaced on Saturday and the mechanic told me my rack and pinion was leaking and needed to be replaced, so they went ahead and did it...here is a list of what they replaced:

- Front and rear brake pads
- Front calipers
- Resurfaced brake drums
- Rack and pinion replacement
- Alignment (Free)

Total was $659...ugh...

Anyways, my car still feels like it's steering / handling awkward...not sure though, it could just be me...any suggestions on how to check this out, besides of course going back to the mechanic...lol.

Thanks.

Did they show you where it was leaking from? Or did you just believe them?

^ Absolutely. $600+ is a great price for all that. My rack and pinion cost me $200 off of eBay and installation is quoted as $210. Is that too much?

even that is on the lower side. A rack and pinion install cost around 500 bucks at any normal independent shop.

Let's check out book time...

Front brakes: 1.3h
Rear brakes: 1.3h
Steering gear: 3.7h
Drum resurface (both): 0.6h
Alignment (front only): 1.1 [4 wheel: 1.6h]
Front Calipers: 0.4h
Total: 8.4h @ average independent shop hourly rate ($90/hr) = $756

Parts...

2 calipers (Honda): ~$200
Steering gear (Honda, sedan): ~$840 (coupe is -$100)
Pads: ~$120
Total: $1260

Parts and Labor Total: $2,016 + tax

Either you robbed this shop or they didn't replace the rack and pinion :lawl:

I HIGHLY doubt the steering rack was OEM. I got mine remanufactured and with a two year warranty. I hope it works out fine.

I highly doubt it too, but I was too lazy to find a reman price when the OEM one was right there.

He raped the shop on labor alone anyways!
