Crank Pully removal

Well its time i did my timing belt... way time im at 133k never done, drive belts look fine but in scared lol.

Anyways havent done it becuase of the crank pulley issue and atm no money probably just enough to buy the belt and do things right later. I dont have any problem getting in and out of the t belt cover.

Anyways looking through the haynes it says you can break thae thing with a strap wrench and a 2 ft breaker bar. I know that special tool says you should use a 5ft bar...

Has anyone had success getting the crank pulley off with just a breaker bar and a strap wrench?

I don't think a strap wrench will be able to hold the pulley in place with the amount of torque needed to break the bolt loose. Here is a trick I learned on my tl, haven't tried it on the accord yet. Get a breaker bar and socket, place the socket on the bolt, put the breaker bar in a position so that you can crank the car over and the breaker bar would stop the bolt from spinning which in turn would loosen that bolt.

Make sure it spins in the right direction, remember I haven't tried this on the accord, just on my tl and my talon. I am in now way responsible for any damages that occur when you try this

Your might need to borrow someones impact gun and air compressor.

I used a propane torch for the crank bolt on my other car. A 3ft breaker bar, plus a 2ft cheater pipe just because my crank bolt had seized.

Your going to need a pulley removal tool also, they are pretty cheap at autozone.

Make sure you buy impact gun sockets, they are much more durable. I split my regular socket trying to get this bolt off.

So a propane tourch has enough heat?? the guy in that video use a gas welder... The crank pulley tool at autozone is it the same thing as the special honda crank pulley removal tool. Ive heard this thing is a ***** and a half. The tool you reffering to keeps the pully from spinning corect?

A propane torch worked for me, the special service tool helps you lock the pulley in place so you can torque the bolt off in the opposite direction.

Remember to use impact sockets, you will ruin regular ones if its tight enough. You will probably need more than 2ft of bar to break it, add another 3ft pipe and you should be good.


If you know someone or a shop that will help you break it lose, I would do that. Using a impact gun is always the easiest and safest way to do things.

Last time I checked no parts stores carry the special tool. I just breoke down and bought the Powerbuilt one off Amazon for ~$40 shipped next day.

Snap-On or Mac may carry the tool on truck for ~$60-100.

I'll be honest, I can't break the damn thing free with muscle power. I had to have my 250+ stepdad break her free for me

The one thing I don't like heating it for is potential ****ing up the front crank main bearing and/or seal with the torch.

just use a impact gun.. it is easiest way to go..
my dad is a mechanic so i usually borrow his tools

ya i just dont know anyone with like a 600lb impact gun is the problem, or else i that would have been my first choice lol
