Weird intermittant AC problem

I need guesses as to what is wrong. Once in a while (1 in 50 tries) the AC will not blow cold. Fans move air fine, but not cold air. In conjunction with the lack of cold air is the fact that none of the lights on the AC contol unit light up.

It is a standard AC unit - not climate control. 1999 sedan

The problem will self-correct after numerous restarts.

Already replaced the AC/clutch relay, but the problem happened again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

c'mon...anybody? Someone has had to experience this.

I'm trying to avoid bringing a big tube of vaseline to the dealer.

How much would a new control unit cost? I'd rather shotgun debug this than let the dealer do the same.

I'm not too sure I would take it to the dealer over a 2% failure rate. But anyway, you should start by checking the wiring, any and all fuses, verify everything around the compressor is plugged in (mine somehow came loose?). But other than that I'm not sure how to help you.

Sounds like you need a new ($140) or used radio bezel with climate controls. You gave the answer away when you said none of the climate control lights work. Circuit board is failing.

could possibly be the control board like finch said. but other things to check is if the compressor comes on and look at the sight glass to see if the refrigerant is actually circulating. you should see slight bubbles in the sight glass. if you see a constant stream of bubbles it could indicate a low charge and if nothing is there, it could be no charge or the unit isnt working which brings it back to the control board.
