You may disagree with it, but it doesn't make it right. The Impreza was a replacement for the Loyale in 1992. It was developed as an economical car below the Legacy. Why you might ask? Because in JDM land they get tax breaks for owning a car under a certain displacement. The reason the Impreza came about was simply because they needed a replacement for a dated platform....the Loyal.
Now a car such as the Lancia Delta Integrale, was developed because they (Lancia) needed a car to meet Group B regulations. So the Delta was developed around these regulations so that it could compete in Group B, which it did, and owned pretty much everything except for the Ur Quattro which was considered almost unbeatable at the time. The Ur Quattro was another car that was developed as a rally car, becasue in Group B, manufacturers could only enter production cars (I forget the exact number that had to be produced) so they would make street versions of these cars so they could be entered into WRC.

The e36 is still a great auto after all these years, and is definitely a true drivers car. My roomate in college had the M3 model. I liked it, but it was too cramped inside, among other things. I remember sitting inside the e46 at auto expo here in Cincinnati several years back, and purely loving the car inside and out The suede accents alone were enough to make me want one, lol. The only thing I disliked about about it was that they sold it in that horrid turqoise-esque color. But for the money these can be had for now, and the improvements over the previous gen, I'd take one in a second. But the e36 does have some things the e46 doesn't.
This place right by my work buys and rejuvenates old and late model BMW's. They always have great looking models sitting outside, you'd probably love it.

That's actually great info. If this doesn't work out with the one I'm looking at on Monday I might give these people a call. I'd go out to Cincinnati for the right car. They have a lot of nice e36's in their inventory.

You have no idea. They have restored some nice e30's from yesteryear, and they find and install various factory trim pieces that make the car look pretty sharp. They give a Bimmer a "proper" restore. And they're almost all manuals.
You can give me a little more detail as to what you're looking for if you like, and I'll keep an eye out.
