Well, thanks for all the replies- mine has 98k miles on it so do you think it would have gone bad by now? When do they tend to fail if you happen to have a bad one?

Hey, mine is at 110,000, and i have a 4cyl auto. Im the second owner and i know it wasn't driven hard... so its in good shape. It kinda lurches forward a little harder than other gears when going from first to second though...

they had a recall on 4cyl and v6. i think the v6 was limited to 98-00 but there is a seperate lawsuit for the 4cyl auto, they are close if not the same transmission with minor differences. I have looked into the warrenty and lawsuit's extensively to get mine repaired for free but since my car is a salvage, it doesnt qualify. They replace free of charge if ur under 109k miles....but u will probably be hassled...most likely...haha

So what's best, should I just run the vin number for recalls on the Honda website and see what comes up?
They don't seem to fail at any particular mile range. I know 6thGen/4cyl owners with AT failures at 23K, 40K and 100K. None of these were driven hard and all were dealer maintained. OTOH I know three who have >130K miles on their original AT and they shift like new. Seems like it's just luck of the draw.
Honda only extended the warranty on the 00-01 AT's, but I've read posts where 02 owners got some or all of the cost of an AT replacement picked up by Honda Corp.

what are common signs of the tranny going out?

Tranny shifts smooth and clean. I suppose I'll just change out the fluid with Honda atf often and keep my fingers crossed.

minez haz 131XXX and shifts like new... but i know how these tranys act up so i still scurred..

Update: Ran the Vin number on the Honda website and found that the auto. transmission recall concerning the "parking pawl actuation lever" was fixed. Is this related to the transmission failures that plague this car or does this have nothing to do with it?
