Okay, maybe I just feel like it's as easy a splicing a couple wires. We only have 3 controls on our steering wheels, at least I do, lol. I feel like that 60 bucks for that PAC interface is retarded. Has anyone ever heard of just, manual modification? Surely, just surely, someone here, or wherever, has said "f$&* payin that 60 bucks for 3 buttons, im gonna wire this myself!"

Is this possible, or are my expectations too high?

I've been looking get to this myself. it seems like some of the newer head units come with the steering control interface built in. still doing my research though I really want a new head unit but not willing to give up the controls.

Yeah, I just ordered this one,

I am not a big fan of the touch screens, simple is how I like it. I wanted a double din since factor is double din. However, if I have to (i dont want to) I will buy this,

but I figure, its gotta be functionally doing something that WE can do with a little wire splicing, without having to dish out another $70

That head unit looks nice. I would be interested to know how you feel about it once you have it installed.

The ASWC interface works well. I've got one in my Accord and in my Outback. As far as I know you don't have an option to make the steering wheel controls work without using some sort of interface. I've also installed the PAC pieces, the most recent in an Frontier. I think that the ASWC is easier to wire and program, but I haven't tried both on the same car.

I've never had wheel controls. What inputs on the aftermarket HU do PAC wires connect to?

Easiest way to figure out what the HU needs to adjust song/volume is to use an PAC or whatever and measure the output going to the HU.

The PAC piece should hook up to the blue/yellow wire on JVC/Kenwood radios, or into the 1/8" jack on Pioneer, Alpine and Sony radios. There is a green/red or green/black wire that comes from the clock spring and into the radio harness if you have controls from the factory. Since I have an LX with a TL wheel I had to source a clock spring from a TL (or EX) with the extra wiring and add the pin to the harness coming from the clock spring.

Since all the functions are sent from the controls to the PAC through one wire I assume each switch has a different impedance and the PAC is what discerns which is which for the HU. If so then the only way to make the controls work is with a PAC or other device.

Found this in the manual, so that seems accurate.

It's a pretty simple device and it usually works well. That's also how some cars like my wife's Outback has some many functions (two rockers and four push buttons) and three OEM wires that is knocked down to one wire. It's also pretty cool when it comes to making your own controls as well!
