Could be a power or grounding issue. You should also use a digital voltmeter and crank it up just before the point of protection and take the voltage directly at the amp's power and ground connection. With the car running, the drop on bass beats should not be less than around 12v. If it is much less than 12v then you have a ground or power problem. Double check all connections are nice and tight (including the battery connection) and try grounding it using the seat belt bolt (sand off the paint at that point so you have a good connection) if that is feasible.

BTW how does it sound just before the point of the amp going into protection mode? Is it clipping and distorting? Cause some amps will go into protection if it is clipping.

Also, feel all the connections after playing for a while if hot or warm. If power passes thru a loose connection, then usually at the loose connection, it will get warm/hot.

4 gauge should be more than enough for 600WRMS. I am running 900WRMS with 4 Gauge.
