This was leaking when I bought the car, but haven't really though about fixing it. For whatever reason I'm on a maintenance kick and want to get things fixed. I'm pretty sure it's leaking out of the dust seal/select lever area. How much of a hassle is it to replace? Is that indeed the problem?

It's a manual transmission, it leaks. Nothing to worry about, mine does the exact same thing. Just wipe it off periodically.

A mech/tech on another site says it may be due to the tranny being overfilled. When I filled it, it was gushing out a bit when I put the fill plug back in. If the weather is a bit better tomorrow I may let some fluid out and see if tha changes anything.

Thats just a breather from the transmission. As the fluid heats up it expands and the breather allows that to happen. Otherwise the pressure inside would cause the axle seals to blow out.

That tech was probably right, it probably was a bit over filled. No need to worry.
