i'd like to go back in the cycling world and get myself a road bike, but i don't know where to start. like what brand, size, etc. I used to be into BMX doing freestyle and jumping when I was in the Philippines, but never a Road Bike.

What would be the typical bike size for 5'7"? I'm not looking for a high end bikes, just somewhere in the middle. I'd probably buy it used one as well, since I don't wanna spend a lot of money. I would say, maybe $400 the the most.

To be honest if you want to be fit properly, there is not a "right" size for your height. Many companies do not use the same geometry, so a 56cm in one brand could be different than one in another. The shop I work at can measure you to find the right size. So I would see if you could find a local shop to do it for you. Yes it cost money if you don't buy a bike, but if you want to have the best bike then it is a good idea. I would say you would want around a 52-54cm bike. I ride a 56cm but depending on the brand I could probably be anywhere from a 52-58cm since it is all measured differently.

As far as brands, they won't make a HUGE difference since u want used except for what components they have. For $400 you could get a decent used road bike if you search long enough, but the problem would be finding one that was serviced regularly and the right fit for you. The shop I work at sells Trek and Gary Fisher bikes. But there are tons more out there. Instead of looking at bike brands used I would almost look at the components and size

Thanx for the advice Eric. You made a very good point.

I guess I just want something that's lightweight. Are all Road Bikes normally light weight regardless of the brand name?

been looking on craigslist and found these:

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/bik/1816673263.html

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/spo/1821857639.html

what do you think about those? I just wanna make sure i'm not over paying them for what the bike is worth.

I'm not really in a rush to buy since I have a cheap mountain bike to ride around, until I find myself a good Road Bike.

I would stay away from the Gary Fisher since it is a mountain bike turned into a borderline street bike. That will never ride and perform as good as an actual road bike. Most of the new road bikes, even some higher end steel frames are going to be light.

The 2300 would not be a bad bike. It loos like it is atleast 8 or so years old though and I just can't see a 47cm being a good fit for you but maybe it would be. It probably has great parts, but since it is so old it really depends on what kind of shape it is in, and $400 for a bike that old still seems somewhat pricey. That bike was probably around $1600 or so new though

**Edit I wouldn't get that 2300 either...It has the old style downtube shifters, so it must be a pretty old bike. The shifters will work but they don't compare to any new stuff

I must pay attention to this thread.

My concern would be that I would probably break a road bike over a mountain bike, only because I like to enjoy a 'spirited' ride when I am on my bike.

that's why i'm considering of just getting a Hybrid or Cyclocross Bike.

With the type of riding that I'd be doing, I'm thinking that Road Bike might not be the right bike for me.

Road Bikes are a fragile and the roads here in LA isn't that great.

Yeah, same here, there is just too much uneven/tempting surfaces for me to use a road bike on.

I have my old mountain bike, just need to get new rims for it.....been lazy.
