Okay so, I currently have an FX 7.2 which is actually not a bad bike, I've enjoyed riding it for the last year and a half.
But I'm wanting to get a road bike here in the next few weeks,
does anyone have anything to say when comparing the Trek 1.2 or 1.5 to a Scott S50?
I road a Trek 2.1 also, I really liked the bike it fit well (I'm a 54) and I believe it had a lighter wheel set, HUGE difference.

I also tried a Caad 10 4c, pretty cool bike, I liked the fit but I felt as if the Trek 2.1 was one less expensive and 2 road better. I'm aware a lot of this comes down to componetry but I'd just like to hear peoples preferences if they want to give some input.

Eric, I'm curious, do you like your Trek 12,000?
and what all have you put into it?
Its a beautiful bike.

Brian Baylis' bike...He's a well known and accomplished local frame builder

Fuji track bike...for the previous poster, the conti ultra sports are on that wheelset...I think they look good and perform even better for the price.

My friend and local guy, Tommy's bike. He built this frame using Columbus tubing. He's being mentored by Brian Baylis. I think this bike is absolutely beautiful and I'm thoroughly impressed that this is his first frame he's ever built.

A Nishiki fixie. Powdercoated white...I just traded this bike to get a sound system in my accord.

...and finally, my baby....my new NJS build. The wheels on there are currently velocity Deep V's that I polished, but I have full NJS wheels with njs dura ace hubs, njs Araya red rims, and soyo gold njs tubular tires for the track

azn,

I have gatorskins on the NJS bike you see above. I had these same tires on a Klein roadbike before. Gatorskins are incredible. If you're looking for awesome durability and grip, gatorskins are fantastic...if you're a weight weenie, they're a bit on the heavier side. Not crazy heavy or anything, but they aren't going to be as light as a a foldable race tire. But, they'll last 8 times as long.

ej,

I'm guessing that you felt the Trek road better because it was smoother. Cannondales are notoriously stiff riding. I've owned 2 cannondales, and personally, I love them. They are stiff, BUT they are some of the most responsive bikes I've ridden. I had an old Cannondale crit race frame that I built up with all dura ace and italian wheels and it sprinted amazingly fast. I sold it to a friend who's doing half iron man's, and he gets a kick out of flying past the guys on $6K tri bikes.

The reason the Trek rode better is the Carbon seat stays, it really makes a big difference in the ride quality.

Its a beautiful bike.

7.2FX is a great bike like you mentioned, unless you start riding longer distance and wanting more performance. Which is sounds like you want.

I personally would stay away from the 1.2 at all cost, and if you can the 1.5.

My opinions:

1.2 has shifters that I HATE, and not just because they are low end Sora, but because of the shifting style. Honestly the only reason I would go with that is if you only want a road bike for the looks, and can't spend more money.

1.5: You will have a slight upgrade by going 2 Tiagra, which are still low-end, but from what I have seen are reliable. The only other difference is the tires and a carbon seatpost and like $200.

2.1: Much better frame, Trek's speedtrap compatible fork if you get a computer. It has better wheels, which are the Bontrager SSR, and they are good daily wheels, but nothing lightweight. The biggest pro, and selling point to me, is that they have Shimano 105 components, aka 10speed. To me 105 is the best all around system when it comes to shifting quality, price, and long term reliability ..This would be my choice if your fine with the price. 2012 models should be coming out in a few months, so maybe stalk your LBS and wait for some deals, unless this year is like last and Trek sells out of road bikes before the new model years are released.

As for my bike, it is actually a 2003 1200. But since I have added stuff I decided to call it the 12,000. It is a great bike, but still has Tiagra. I have never had problems with it, but would love to upgrade to 105/Ultegra. However, I see no need to waste the money on an 8 year old frame. (Most of my additions were free from the days I used to work at a Bike Shop)

Well, the 2.1 has been my favorite of the bikes I've tested.
The price feels a little scary to me.. but they offered to sell it to me for 1,100, its the only one they have left in the store, so I've really thought about getting it I mean they're selling the 1.5 for the same amount, sticker price.

but a good question I guess is, would this bike or a bike close to this level suit me well if I wanted to start 'racing' and participating in events? and kind of stepping my foot in the door of cycling?

I've been reading some reviews and it seems that the front derailer is Tiagra? while the rear is a 105?

Oh, and just curious, do you prefer a compact? if not what do you prefer?

If it is a stock 2011 Trek 2.1 it should be full 105 minus the brakes. I started out with a triple on my bike, but got rid of it. Unless your planning on riding lots of hills there is no reason for it, my opinion.

The 2.1 will not be the best racing bike, but your not going to get into good racing bikes until much more expensive. It does have a decent aluminum frame, so you could upgrade it down the road. Or once you get into rider just upgrade to another bike.

OHHHHHH and sweet bikes Emo...that litespeed is might fine!!!
